BIKE TO WORK
BICYCLES: Bike to Work Day Drew a Great Turnout Fortunately, attitudes such as those expressed by Terry Howard in his May 19 letter did not deter people from biking to work last Friday in celebration of Bike To Work Day. In addition to a fantastic turnout of bicyclists, some of the local Starbucks stores generously contributed to Bike to Work Day stations in Bremerton and Silverdale with coffee and pastries. Their ongoing support is much appreciated! While I sometimes wish we lived in a world as simple as Mr. Howard seems to think it is, every day I am reminded of how complex it is. Our roadways have dangers for everyone using them. Banning particular groups is not the answer. We need to all work together to make our roads safer for everyone. In this age of high gas prices, increasing pollution effects, and astonishing obesity rates among both adults and children, it is essential to include safe biking and walking routes in our local infrastructures. Our mind-set also needs to change; those of us who are able need to learn how to get out of our cars to either walk or bicycle for short trips — and people in cars need to remember we are there. Pair of bicyclists fall on Kitsap Way

BREMERTON Two Seattle bicyclists said road conditions on Kitsap Way near Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park caused them to crash their bikes Saturday afternoon, according to police reports.

Bremerton Fire Department medics treated a 57-year-old Seattle man for hand and elbow injuries. A 41-year-old Seattle woman who also crashed Saturday said her head hurt but she didn't need to be hospitalized, police reports said.

Both were wearing helmets. They were reportedly riding with a group of cyclists who also complained of the road conditions, reports said. The pair told police they did not wish to seek legal action.

An experienced and well-know local cyclist was killed in March after a crash in the same area, and since his death local cyclists have been asking officials for safer bicycle routes.

The Seattle man in Saturday's crash told police the cyclists were given a ride to the Bremerton ferry terminal by a motorist who told them of the March 15 crash that killed Orlando Suarez of Silverdale, who was executive officer of Bangor-based Trident submarine USS Nevada's Blue crew and an experienced cyclist.

Police sent the report to city officials for review.
